If you have listened to any online screen capture videos recently you may have experienced the “mouse voice” – that high-pitched voice that comes and goes. It’s just irritating enough to make you question WHY you’re listening to the video.

Here’s why it happens and how to cure it.

When Adobe Flash came out with their latest version 9.0 it had a bug – it created the high-pitched “chipmunk” voice that you’re experiencing. It’s not the video creator’s fault. Nor is it the fault of Camtasia, the program that most developers use to create the videos.

The bug shows up only when you use Flash 9 – none of the prior versions have that problem. So as a listener, you can always choose to use an older version of the Flash Player.

However, as a developer, you have to “cure” your videos. To do that, Camtasia developed a program you can download free of charge. Then you merely run every one of your SWF files through that program. Then re-upload them to your server.

Time-consuming? You bet! But so far that’s the only solution for your older videos. (No one knows whether or not Adobe plans to correct the problem in their Flash player.)

If you’re using Camtasia, be sure you have upgraded to the latest version (5.02 or later) – because they built the “fix” into the update.
